In 1853 Thomas Davis opened a small office on Broad Street in downtown Philadelphia from which he intended to operate a building business . (This street was located between Second and Third Street, crossing over Arch and Race Street. ) Tom Davis continued in the business until his retirement in 1903. Thomas' son, Franklin B. Davis, who had been associated with his father, carried on the business moving his office and carpenter shop to 6 N. 13th Street. As business prospered, he again moved, in 1906, to larger quarters at 35 S. 17th Street. The business continued to grow and the need for more room caused him to purchase a three story property at 240 N. 16th Street. The offices were located on the second floor and the third floor was used as a carpenter shop. During this period at 240 N 6thStreet, Franklin's sons, Franklin and Gilbert, were taken in as members of the firm which became known as F. B. Davis & Sons. As a result of the widening of Vine Street, it was necessary to move again. The firm relocated to 173 Spring Garden Street in 1951. During this time Franklin Davis Jr. and Alfred MacMoran were taken in as members of the company, having served their apprenticeships as engineers and carpenters. Mr. Davis and Mr. MacMoran carried on a successful business under the name F. B. Davis Sons Incorporated. We are proud of our affiliation with the Carpenters Company of the city and county of Philadelphia instituted in 1724 and incorporated in 1790. Our original founder Thomas M. Davis became a member in 1869; followed by his son Franklin B. Davis, who became a member in 1918; followed by his son Gilbert C. Davis, who became a member in 1924. At present, Alfred MacMoran , Lee Davis and Alex MacMoran are active members. In 1977, the firm's headquarters were relocated to Bala Cynwyd, PA in the immediate suburbs of Philadelphia. In recent years the company has become F.B. Davis Sons CMI (Construction Management Incorporated ) In 2003, F.B. Davis Sons CMI and our affiliates celebrated our 150th anniversary of doing business and 100th year as F.B. Davis Sons, providing estimating services and building restoration, renovations and construction services in the greater Philadelphia region. |
